UCM vs UCM 1500pts Write Up with Pics

PostSun Oct 09, 2016 4:36 pm

I promised I’d write up a battle report for this game a couple places since it was an amazing example of how Critical Locations and Infantry can impact a game. Mission was 3 objectives in a line diagonal to our table quarter deployment edges with a critical location in the centre of the other 2 table quarters. Was a UCM Mirror Match which I normally am not a fan of but it worked very well in this case! Hope you can bear with my writing as this happened a few days ago and I didn’t have time till now to put it all down. Some details may be a turn off when they happened and I gloss over units that had little impact on a given turn and if you have any questions because my writing is vague and disjointed let me know :p

First off the army lists:

No picture for them sadly. Also I'm guessing this was the list based on what was on the table.

The table:
Image

Turn 1
Urban wins initiative and no fast movers come out of reserves. Woods move down their left flank with their Broadsword and Rapiers. Rapiers deploy and Broadsword Condor lands behind a building. On the Woods right they send the Starsprites towards the centre of the table and deploy their Longbows with the Ferrum and Kodiak in the centre rear. Eagle and Kanatas move on heading mostly centre but a little to the right and fire into some Urban buildings. 2 Ravens fly to the centre and the other 2 hang back and drop some Hazards and Legionaires into the home objective building. Urban UCM move their Albatross towards their right flank CL and their Broadsword towards their left flank CL. Condor full of Flak Teams drops off both Bears and has one team enter the home objective building to help search while the other Bear drives up to a large building that is close to the centre objective building. Urban Eagle takes some pot shots at the Woods home objective. Urban Hazard Suit Ravens drop their squads into the home objective building while their Kodiak and Longbows are places centre rear of their quarter.

Turn 2
Urban again wins initiative and one Archangel arrives. Flak Teams find the home objective and hand off to a Hazard Suit unit who fly away. Ground Flak Team moves up and into the large building next to the centre objective. This would prove to be a very good use of the unit. Other Hazards move out to join the Flak Team near the centre. Albatross deploys its mass of Urban tanks at the CL while the Urban Broadsword secures its CL as well. Woods moves 2 units of Legionaires into the centre objective building via Ravens and fails to find their home objective this turn. Archangel swoops by a kills a Raven at the Woods home objective area. Eagles trade fire with each other’s home objective buildings causing some 4 dp to Urban Hazards Suits in a devastating falling masonry roll! Starsprites zoom to the mass of Urban tanks and spot for the Kodiak which rolls a 1 to hit of course. All in all not too exciting a turn however Urban now leads Woods 4-0 as both CLs were in Urban hands at the end of the turn.

Turn 3
Now things get a little more exciting! The Retaliator arrives this turn and drops a blast on the Urban tank swarm. Thinking that my A10 will save me from the worst I don’t reaction fire as I want to shoot down Starsprites/Condors later in the turn. Wrong move as 3 Sabres and a Rapier explode! Flak Teams make their presence felt by shooting down 3 Starsprites from the home building and more importantly shooting down a Legionaire Raven next to the centre objective as it and a friend were hiding from the Rapiers on the other side of the building. Urban Broadsword sits tight on its CL and fails to hit a Woods Rapier while the Woods Katanas slowly make their way over to it while the Woods Eagle puts a dp on the Broadsword with its railguns. Woods manages to find their home objective and fly it away but don’t find the centre one this turn. Woods Kodiak makes a nice hit and kills 2 more of the Urban Sabres leaving only 2 Rapiers and a Sabre to hold their position. Urban Wolverines move up to support the tanks and fail to hit any Starsprites who in turn fail to kill a Rapier. All the while Longbows toss smoke into friendly and enemy tanks formations alike trying to both protect the Urban Rapiers as well as reduce their accuracy. Wolverines move up to help and try and shoot down the Woods Broadsword Condor before it lands (giving Zac a heart attack as they score 2 dps on it right after I told him they are unlikely to shoot it down and if he didn’t move in soon I would win the game on that CL alone!). There are too few Urban units near the CL to prevent the Woods Broadsword from claiming the point. Turn ends 5-3 with a CL each.

Turn 4
Urban UCM has been holding its own with and early lead at the critical locations so far but turn 4 sees that change. Casualties have been mounting while Woods troops are mostly intact if a little out of scoring positon. Woods finds the centre objective but runs into a problem when their Raven is shot down by the nearby Flak Team before it can be flown away. This leaves about 15 men stuck in the middle of the board with no evac and a vital objective in their hands! Katanas try to kill off the Flak Team but their Hazard Suit escorts manage to take most of the random falling masonry and don’t lose any bodies. Woods finally takes over a CL by pushing out the surviving Urban tanks. Woods have their Fireblade Condor move to attack the Flak Team building but before they get a chance to deploy the Archangels send to the ground killing 2 of the flame tanks. Survivor does manage to flame one base of Flak off the table (couldn’t remember off hand it leaving a dead transport counted as a disembark and ruled no allowing it to shoot this turn). Smoke games continue with the Urban tanks that are left. The Retaliator shows up to end Urbans smoke fun and destroys both Urban Longbows. Between the Starsprites and Kodiak only 1 Urban Rapier is alive at the end of the turn. The rest of the turn is not very exciting with the Kanatas still too far away to score and the Woods Eagle failing to kill the Urban Broadsword. Lots of infantry did to the wall and managed to knock 2 dps off the Urban Eagle. Urban Hazard Suits tried to hurt the Katanas but that loss of E from their old stats came up to bite them resulting in no damage done. Turn ends with a CL each and Woods holding an objective for a 6-5 score.

Turn 5
Woods really puts the hurt on this turn. Urban Broadsword kills the last Fireblade and then falls to the Woods Eagle finally. Katanas continue a slow move up firing into the Flak/Hazard building but still very far from the CL that is now clear. Last Urban Rapier is destroyed along with a couple Wolverines. In a desperate attempt to claim the CL that the Urban Broadswords wreckage left open the Hazard Suits nearby hop out of their building and are within 3” as is a Bear that drove around the corner. Sadly for those men the Katanas and Retaliator said no to their daring plan and left them all dead and the point controlled by no one at the end of the turn. With infantry at the walls in the centre objective building the Albatross and other Urban transports do their best to try and kill them and deny Woods their objective vp. This doesn’t work in the slightest with probably 24+ dice amounting to maybe 3 dps on 3 bases. The other Legionaries who flew the home objective off the table for Woods have also rejoined the battle and head into the building to add some more bodies to guard the objective before their Raven is also shot down by a passing Archangel. The urban Flak team at the home objective abandoned their post last turn and had their Condor and Bear drop them off at the CL with the enemy Broadsword. Their Bear didn’t survive the Woods infantry firing from the walls at it however they did end up with one base alive staring down the Broadsword with no cover in the street. Those infantry at the walls also managed to shoot down the Urban Eagle after it spent 2 turns going toe to toe with their last Rapier (it did kill its target after the dice finally had enough of me cursing them!) while they could do nothing but watch as a Kodiak strike killed the other 2 Woods Rapiers leaving the Broadsword all alone. With the turn coming to an end and the Broadsword still laying claim to the CL for Woods, the Urban UCM use the last activation of the turn to pull off one final daring move. The Hazards Suits that flew off with their objective long ago had returned in turn 4 and crept along the table edge in their Raven. Now they flew forward into action and were able to land across from the Woods Broadsword and bring enough points onto the CL to claim it for Urban at the end of the turn! With that move over the score was now 7-5.

At this time we measured the distance for the Katanas to see if they could make it to the open CL. They were short by about an inch and a half meaning that no one could score that location. We both assumed that the Broadsword would survive the turn and my exposed infantry would die so at the end of turn 6 the score would be 7-6 no matter what either of us did as he couldn’t get the objective off the table or reach the other CL to tie the game. So in the end my Urban UCM came out on top by 1 vp!

So couple things we learned:

Broadswords can't hit the broadside of a barn but they can hold a point! I'm not set on saying they are a better choice than a pair of Gladii but am leaning that way. I still haven't used this unit to its potential yet but it has been a nice brick to force people to react to it. Even though they killed only a Sabre, Bear and Fireblade between the two of them on the board they both allowed us to score points that my Sabres were unable to. The cheaper points than a pair of Gladii also makes them appealing regardless!

Infantry matter in the UCM! We saw my Flak Teams do incredible work this game and basic Legionaires also played a role. My infantry managed to kill 2 Ravens, 1 Katana and several Starsprites. My Hazards Suits also scored 1 critical location point after flying off the board with an objective. His infantry which are mostly Legionairs managed to kill an Eagle, 2 Wolverines and put several glancing blows on a Rapier (to my horror and relief). His Hazards had little impact this game and mine only killed a single Katana but they did threaten things which may have prevented his Katanas from making it to the critical location in time and his were able to survive a beating on his home objective building until he got the objective out. Our lack of CQB may have helped our infantry shine, we both agreed that one unit of First Borns in the centre building would have made a very different outcome for those troopers!

The Fast Movers were a major impact this game. By shooting down the Fireblade Condor and a Raven my Archangels kept a lot of heat off my men literally and also gave me a chance to clear out the centre buildings as a squad of Hazards in there would have guaranteed the falling masonry wouldn't have worked. The Retailiator got lucky against my tank swarm killing 4 of the 6 it hit. Even so if I was any other faction a hit lit that would have been equally deadly or more so! It taking out my backfield Longbows also aided him greatly by preventing me from shelling the centre building more (I was hoping to kill his men then send in my Hazard Suits to claim the objective before his reinforcements got there). Being able to then swing around and kill my exposed infantry all with 1 bomber really showed the value of a FM but having a 2dp A7 does make it easier to ignore AA bubbles. I was also a bit target saturated with my AA busy winning me the game by keeping dropships away or dead rather than stop his bomber from killing my men.

All in all an excellent game and it took way longer than expected! Zac played very well for someone just getting back into the game after a long break and not much experience before that.

Great batrep! Very nice!

You were correct that the Fireblades could shoot, since surviving a wrecked dropship does not count as a disembark.

Looking at your pictures, however, your CL placement looked odd. They're supposed to be in the center of each of those quarters, but you had them offset from the center. Not sure in what order you set up your board, but I suggest for Careful Advance (or any mission) putting your three objective buildings down and then placing the CLs in the center of their quarters, and then placing the remaining buildings.

Aside from that, really excellent report! Sounds like a great game. And, yes, your FMs really made a difference! It's got me thinking about ordering a Retaliator (and an Albatross) with some Talon points... ;)

Thanks! It was a really good game thus the need to do a battle report.

Youre right about setting the objectives down first. I did that with the buildings but set up the rest before the critical locations so they were awkward to fit properly.

I'm testing Albatross lists now. Tough to fit those blocks in but seems kinda fun so far.

Well in regards to surviving a crash I direct you to page. 45, on the right paragraph second sentence under the table "Units placed in this way may not shoot for the remainder of the turn..."

German space magic for PHR would you like to know more?

Thanks! Learn something new each day. I was remembering the living rules post about crashing onto the table not counting as a disembark. Took that to mean it could shoot without checking the main book. It only killed a single base of Flak before dying and they had already done their job so no game impact but will remember in future now.
