PHR/UCM battle fleet recommened builds

PostSat Sep 02, 2017 7:51 am

Hello, got the UCM and PHR battle fleet set at gencon. Looking for advice on which ships to build (or which ships not to build). Mainly going to be playing with random friends or players interested in it. So i'll be supplying the ships for both sides unless i get a play group going. So less interesting in competitive fleets, and more about fairly balanced fleets.

The Bellerophon is a really good PHR ship, but most importantly build all the Strike Carriers you can (Medeas and New Orleans) the latter is the most important one.

Personally I am not a fan of the UCM Troopship though the PHR ones are ok.

German space magic for PHR would you like to know more?

The PHR Orion for a standard cruiser is pretty buff. It puts out 8 medium caliber shots to either side. Just one of these babies finished of 2 out of 3 ships in one round of firing. Though they all were damaged, before it fired, it was still nasty. Hence why I concentrated on killing one of a pair of them before he got to fire both of them. Only the target in front arc survived, and that's the weak point on these ships, i.e. front/rear arc's. I'd run them in pair's of 2, that's 16 shots to both sides, though you'll loose some range when shooting through your ships. It just depends on how tight you want to run them together. With a coherency of 6" for cruisers, that's 6" off range for the farthest cruiser shooting. But if your not worried about explosions from friendly ships, then I'd tighten it up a bit from the beginning at 3" to maximize your targets. When you start taking damage, you can spread them apart then if you worried. But considering the firepower they can put out, I'd say screw it.

In larger games, I'd run 4 together up center of board. Not much can survive when you have 16 to 32 shots coming at you. With tight groupings you still loose range at -3",-6",-9" with a 3" coherency between ships. When you have an 8 scan + 6 signature w/o spikes that's a 14" range. In this particular case, all ships had a minor/major spike, so you could see them half way across the board. But probably the most efficient build would be 3 Orions in tight formations.

But be aware, that with so much firepower, they are prime targets, so fighter escorts are a must.

As for the UCM, the Berlin does the same thing as the Orion, as a standard workhorse cruiser. Their Burn through lasers pack a punch, albeit not as much as the Orion, but good enough for the UCM. They are efficient Burn through lasers will almost max out damage most of the time and cheap cruisers. Once you get over 1/2 hull damage, you'll get a critical damage roll and usually pick up another 1-3 points of damage. Since most cruiser hull are 10 points, you only need 5-6 damage to trigger this check.

Another UCM ship would be a Moscow heavy cruiser with a Burn through laser (8) or twin Burn through lasers (6). Since you must go "Weapons Free Order" in order to use the twin lasers, the Burn through laser (8) will most likely kill any cruiser it fires at in a turn barring bad dice.

Carriers, Troopships, and Strike ships for both races are a must as well. Hope this helps.

The Moscow is all Mass Drivers, it's the St Petersburg that has twin Cobras.
