Be very interesting to see the designs. I'm actually looking forward to the Scourge designs the most. Aesthetically they are such a pleasing faction.

PHR destroyers will hopefully see one that can do the broadside thing the faction is meant to have. Wouldn't need too many silly rules I feel. Something with a reinforced prow to help it get in place and then just Broadside weapons perhaps with Fusillade to encourage the "WF" designs of destroyers.

I agree with liking ng the Scourge aesthetic the most..they’ll be the destroyers at the top of my to buy list and my largest fleet.
Also agree with hoping broadsides are encouraged...currently phr meta is more like Midway than Trafalgar...

Command cards can change that somewhat and the recent ERRATA also helped thanks to linked. People also don't realise just how good the Ajax and Theseus are IMHO.

That said I think my issue is the PHR are best played in a way that stands apart from the background. My feeling from.the background in the book is one of armour, gunnery and advanced ECM/Hacking.

An advanced destroyer with some sort of hacking/ECM capabilty for hunting Heavies and above would be a cool 2nd choice.

With another featuring armour and fusilade capable broadsides.

Especially as Ajax, Orion, Leonidis and Scipio all give easy access to frigate killing options.

I'm just getting into the game, so it's all Droptheory (Theoryfleet?) postulation on my part, but don't really see what niche destroyers are supposed to fill - at least for the UCM (I haven't gotten to the other factions in the book yet ;)) Frigates have specialist (and cheapo hit squad) roles covered, and light cruisers provide cheap(-ish), distributed firepower. A traditional "wet" navy paradigm would put DDs somewhere between the two, but I'm not sure what they could accomplish in this tonnage range that CLs and FGs can't.

One potential exception: Historically, one of the key roles destroyers played was as anti-sub ships. There don't seem to be any platforms designed to attack ships in atmo from low orbit. Granted, that's largely a balance issue, but maybe specialist ships for this role wouldn't be too destabilizing? Then again, this kind of steps on corvette's toes a bit. Furthermore 3/4 hulls per faction argues against them being focused on a single, specialized role.

Anyway, I'm rambling. Any other thoughts or gossip about the tactical role of these things?

Mediocrates. DDs as stated will sit inbetween Frigates and Lightcruisers. Most (not all) will benefit from going weapons free the most. The trade off is they will pack much more respectable firepower than we are used to in a single hull that size.

We know 13 are planned between 4 factions. So that is more 2 per faction with perhaps 1 faction having 3.

Nothing else has been said however I can really see 1 of the variants being ASW focussed as you said. Quite frankly that would really alter the game meta and be a very welcome thing IMHO.

Mini Btl destroyer..pandora-like
Aegis destroyer...

I'd love a "Bern" or "Zurich" Swiss army knife destroyer for UCM...

It'd have bombardment and be a Carrier, no main weapons and presumably bad point defense and bad close action.

Hangs back and provides some fighters or bombers and then can rush forward and smack a orbitally secured cluster's ground units.

One of the backer updates had a sneak peak of a UCM destroyer. Looked quite like it was a BTL option to me. I'm on my phone but tomorrow I'll try post a picture.

I think Bombard destroyer is unlikely for UCM. My money is on.

1) A mass driver/Aegis one focussed on weapons free

2) A mini burnthrough laser hunter killer focussed on hunting atmospheric craft from low orbit.
