Shooting Air-to-Air weapons into space

Hi guys. There was a bit of a discussion in FB group, regarding rule query which I asked. I would like to bring it here, to maybe get some official clarification.

The question:
Can a Close Action Weapon with Air-to-Air rule shoot from atmosphere into orbit? Example: corvette in atmosphere firing CAW into a cruiser in high orbit and within scan range - is this legal?

Thanks!

as on FB stated: imho no, as air to air requires both the shooter and the target to be in atmosphere. to be able to shoot out of athmosphere you either have to use normal weapons or a caw with air to air and escape velocity (a weapon which does not exist)

Completely agree. Air to Air only allows to shoot targets IN atmosphere not targets in Orbit from atmosphere with CAW weapons.

So Air-to-Air can´t be used form lower orbit to lower orbit?

Air to air is only to fire from one ship in atmosphere to an objective in atmosphere. That's all. You can fire to / from other orbital layer but without any benefit.

No it clearly states it fires like a normal weapon outside of atmosphere. The only thing air-to-air changes from normal shooting rules is that you can shoot at target in atmosphere while in atmosphere yourself without needing 6's to hit and also being allowed to fire CAW in atmo to atmo targets.

Yeah we play Air-to-Air as:

Same layer, High, Low or Atmosphere: fire without penalty

High to low, or low to high: fire with +1 to lock

Low to Atmosphere, or Atmosphere to Low: fire with +1 to lock

Atmosphere to High, or High to Atmosphere: Erm.... 6s? Not sure this has ever happened!

Hmm,
Normal CA weapons cannot shoot into/out of atmo.
Air-To-Air allows you to:
- Use CA weapons in atmo
- Shhoot using normal lock value
If both shooting ship and target are in atmo.

To me that means that you cannot use Air-To-Air Close Action weapon if either shooting ship or target are outside of atmo. If both are outside atmo, it works like a normal CA weapon.

I agree you cannot shoot air-to-air CAW from atmo up or from any orbit down. Must be in space or atmosphere, no combo.

This is our reading of the rule as well.

Air-to-Air does not seem to allow for firing from Atmosphere to Orbit, nor from Orbit to Atmosphere. That appears to be the intent of the rule as well.
