PHR vs UCM 1250pts with Pics

PostFri Jun 09, 2017 2:23 am

So I had a rematch against the same PHR player as my last battle report. This one didn't go well for him. We are preparing for a tournament late June in another city and when we rolled a tourny mission it came up Mixed Engagement which is the mission with Distant approach that he is most worried about. The TL;DR is that I won with my UCM handily and Distant did effect him greatly in this game.

I used the same list as last time and plan on keeping that one for a few more games before switching to a dual Avalon list for fun.

Turn 1
Image
I sent in both my Madrid/New Orleans and Santiago BGs while he was able to send in his Orphesus and Echo BGs. I planned on only actually bombing one Cluster but didn't need to as it would play out. I thought sending one Madrid centre and the other left would give me enough wiggle room to decide where to actually bombard while not fully committing to one Cluster or the other. At this time I actually was going to give the left side Cluster to him while sending the Santiago to kill Medea at the right Cluster (and using the Madrid there to make him think I would commit to the other side). I was then going to kill the centre and far Space Stations while keeping my own.

Turn 2
Image
He surprised me by sending so many Medea centre which allowed me to kill them Turn 3. For turn 2 however I was able to get 3 tanks down to his 2 as one Medea was out of range. He was going to send it towards the right Cluster but got scared off by the Santiago. He had nothing else to come on this turn (5 BGs and 2 with SR20) so I secured the left flank with my Rio and Berlin while setting my St Pete up for some Weapons Free action in future turns. He took the left Cluster while I took the right this turn and the centre Space Station took 3 UCM tanks to 2 PHR.

Turn 3
Image
Now things got a little more interesting with my Saratoga BG and his Achilles and Bellerophon showing up.
This turn saw me nuke both his troopships which was a sever blow to him given I had more assets on the centre Space Station and New Orleans still on the left Cluster as well. St Pete was able to Weapons free on the centre troopship killing it while the Berlin and Rio took care of the left. On the right I simply dropped more infantry into an unopposed Cluster.

Turn 4
Image
I Silent Running my St Pete this turn in order to hit the Bellerphon on the next while avoiding their BTLs. The Saratoga took out one Achilles that was lit up by my Jakarta. The Bellerophons having nothing else to target decided to reduce my scoring by blasting the Space Station in the centre and then bombing it. Not too much else exciting happened this turn despite it being scoring. I gained most of the VP with him only scoring his own Space Station and contesting the left Cluster.

Turn 5
Image
This turn his torpedoes hit but unlike last game they did not crit which meant my Saratoga survived after their strike killed the last Achilles. In the centre I traded my St Pete for a Bellerophon (getting another Weapons Free I might add). All in all nothing unexpected based on where things were in Turn 4.

Turn 6
Image
Simple mop up for me here. With my Saratoga activating before the last Bellerophon I was easily able to remove it. As you can see at the end most of his ships were dead and I was able to win the ground war on the left Cluster despite his Echos valiant efforts.

Final score was 38-9 for the UCM after killpoints were tallied.

After game thoughts:

Well my lack of Lima again did not impede me at all with my Jakarta/New Orleans group doing a fine job of Active Scanning. I really like this group for Space Station missions as it lets me claim my own on Turn 4 with no issue as I have a back New Orleans just waiting around. This allows my other assets to swing forward and the Space Station itself won't have range to most things till Turn 4+ most games anyway.

As the PHR player feared the Distant Approach hampered his ability to bring on combat BGs with 2 of them on SR20. I suggested he modify the list to make one of them smaller and he agreed (the Achilles will likely become a single ship with escort). This game also highlighted the swing nature of torpedoes as in our last match he nuked 2 Saratoga with them while in this game they didn't crit so my Saratoga shrugged the hits off.

My Madrid did little this game besides help claim Critical Locations but that was more because the PHR player mismanaged his drop assets. He said next time he would send both troopships after the Space Stations and try and get the extra guns while an Achilles and its escorts would attack a flank instead. If he had done that I would likely still gotten less use of the Madrid but they could have pushed hard down the centre to use their CAW and just Weapons Free till they blew up.

All in all I would say this was a bad match up in mission and fleets since I had 2 combat BGs on the table ready for Turn 3 while he had none.
