Rav's UCM & PHR & Urban Table Plog

PostMon Jul 13, 2015 7:27 am

So, I've had some of these minis for, quite literally, years. Recently I thought it might be a good idea to actually paint them, such that I can then game with them. Revelation. So, for the UCM, I'm using the mini-hexocam stencils from anarchy models, and despite a few hiccups (that they stick really, really well to Vallejo Brown Violet and no other colour), it's coming along nicely.

With commander(s), this is a 750 point force, perfect for a Sunday Skirmish.

The whole force, basically a UCM starter army with a couple of Falcons added in.

Close up of Bear #1 (I need to name these things, I think)

The lead Falcon (Seriously, names will help when I expand this… plus, it sounds way cooler)

The Sabre squad (in the Clash list they learn to share with some Rapiers…)

I'm working with the exact same stencils right now, though different colors.

Looks like you didn't have any problems getting sharp raised edges when you took the stencils off: how did you manage that? I used pretty thin layers (Vallejo and Reaper paint, Vallejo satin varnish between layers), but still had a bit of raised edges when I took them off.

I love my job (well, I love having a job), but a bad day of gaming beats a good day of work every time!

It could be down to the fact I'm using an airbrush, so I'm getting exceptionally thin layers compared to brush painting. I haven't actually tried using these stencils to brush paint, so I can't help too much there.

If you do happen to be airbrushing like I am, you might find that your paint consistency is subtly wrong for the application. I'm using a fairly high psi (45-50 range) with slightly thinned airbrush paint and primer. I do sometimes get raised edges after the final primer coat (because I like Parched Grass as the base colour), but it tends only to be around the very first stencils I stuck down.

Another possible issue (for airbrush or brush painting) could be that the paint is setting around the edge of the stencil first, essentially gluing it in place, meaning the edges have to stretch slightly before they break during stencil removal. For the next batch I'm going to double up on primer coats and see how that affects the issue.

And for those interested, the army list:

Finished up magnetising some Wolverines, and put together a load of light dropships. Still waiting on some 2mm magnets to secure the Wolves to the Raven-B's though.

I magnetized the Wolverines the same way, but I'm skipping magnets to hang them from the Ravens, as they clip pretty well into the hangers. It'd be hard to put the magnets anywhere that wouldn't mess up the lines.

Your UCM are certainly looking good dude. You going to be getting the new commander when he comes out? Should look ace in your scheme.
