What I really liked about the tournament rules was the Victory Conditions: It was a mix Victory Points and Kill points.
The victory point table (through ground combat and critical locations) ran from 10-10 (0-2 VP difference) to 16-4 (13+ vp difference) in different steps. In addition, you could earn additional tournament points (to reduce your loss or increase the win) by calculating the Kill points difference. This element would divide the remaining 4 Tournament points (and made all results possible between a 10-10 and 20-0).

It kept all my 3 games very interesting; The persons loosing the ground game still had something to play for and it resulted into some real bloodbaths! :D As far as I recall, a lot of games where really close in the end. So I guess Hawk did a good job there (or it might had to do with the absence of Shaltari).

In other games I play where "kill points" are used to determine the winner, there is often something like half points to be gained. In one of my games, a Seattle escaped with 1HP remaining and he was worth 'zero' killpoints. One could think about adding a rule where crippled ships (by means of getting at 50% or below due to hull damage received, not by means of any weapons) generate half the value in KillPoints when they do survive the game. What do you think?

Hawk's games are consistent in that a damaged unit is fully functional until it is destroyed. I like that.

(Of course, in Dropfleet, a ship can have some degree of being less than fully functional due to Crippling effects, and I like that aspect of this game, too, but in general I like that in order to get any KPs, you need to kill that unit. It makes for less housekeeping and simpler scoring, which are two core principles of Hawk's games...)
I love my job (well, I love having a job), but a bad day of gaming beats a good day of work every time!
