Origins 2017

PostWed Mar 15, 2017 7:56 pm

I was looking at the event schedule for Origins, in particular for Dropfleet, and I saw that there's two types of events. A standard "learn to play one", and a "drop on Orgins" event which I'm assuming is some kind of simple battle or short campaign, rather than a proper tournament.

Can anyone, either Talon or Hawk, confirm this, or give more information as to what the Dropfleet stuff will be like at Origins?

The events are ran by a gaming club instead of us specifically but I'll see if I can get some clarification on those.

It looks like there are 4 Dropzone events, a couple Dropfleet pickup game slots, and the rest are learn to play time slots which are basically scheduled demos.

So this is the description from the event.

"So you learned the rules, now you have a chance to prove how good a commander you are. Your objective is to take the Columbus Convention Center from your opponents and control the area around it, so that you have control of the Dropzone. Bring your own fleet or use one of ours. See 40KOrigins starting in April 2017 for additional rules. "

If I recall correctly from last year it was a starter skirmish on a map of Ohio with the sector being the Greater Columbus Convention Center.

They also have a Starter Army Tournament and a 1500 point Tournament scheduled for Dropzone. You could also just come to visit! I like meeting people!

I'm struggling to find anything in that abomination of a spreadsheet they're calling a 'schedule'.

Do we know what days the 1500pt events are?

Or just what keywords to look for when trying to plan to attend larger dropzone/fleet tourney play?

Here you go man. There are two tournaments one for each game. On 6/16/17 starting at 9:00 a.m. Eastern there will be a Dropzone Commander Tournament (Event ID 1474, 1,500 points). On 6/17/17, also at 9:00 a.m. Eastern there will be a Dropfleet Commander tournament (Event ID 1515, 1,250 points). Both are 3 round tournaments. Origins is listing the events with limited seats but both are expandable if they oversell, so I encourage as many people as we can get to sign up! Hawk will be at the convention so that means Athens and Scorpions so you can grab you convention only pieces and then get a few good games in! I hope to see some of you there and for a great turn out!

You must mean Dropfleet if it's a 1,250 tournament. Either that or its a typo from wherever you got it, and should be corrected ASAP. Dropzone tournaments are typically 1,500 points, that is standard tournament size...

Glenn Here... I'm running the Dropfleet events at Origins. Contact me with questions. And yes, I swear they make that spreadsheet hard to read on purpose every year...

Here's the breakdown:

INTRO TO DFC, where I teach folks how to play, models are provided. And if most everyone at the table already knows the rules, then we get into more advanced stuff. 1 generic token.

Wed 4pm
Thu 10am, 2pm
Fri 10am, 2pm
Sat 10am, 2pm
Sun 10am

DROP ON ORIGINS, call this intermediate/advanced play, where you can use our models or bring your own. It's assumed you either know the game or have attended one of the above. It runs into the evening hours, so I won't enforce a hard stop time. 2 generic tokens.

Thu 5pm
Fri 5pm
Sat 5pm

DROPFLEET COMMANDER TOURNAMENT, a 3 round tournament, run by the Hawk reps themselves, with prizes. And yes, we still have a bit of space open. It is indeed 1250 points.

Sat 9am

For all of the above, if I have any spaces left whatsoever, I'll take generic tokens and walk-up players. I'll even pack in 1-2 players worth of overflow, as I can run an intro game with a few extra here and there. (More than that and I'll need an actual ticket in preference to generic tokens. Mr Houseman, our logistics man, will have my kneecaps if I don't. =)
