Moonshot fleet tactics and ship selectoon

PostMon Jul 10, 2017 2:10 pm

Hello fellow admirals,

I have a game coming up this weekend and it will be Moonshot vs PHR. I was wondering what your experiences are with UCM and this scenario?
I'm thinking about taking a lot of fast units to make use of the cover provided by the LSO.

So any pointers?

I played a 999 point game with a BTL heavy list. I had a hard time lining up shots with the F(n) ships most of the game. I split my forces 75%/25% towards the sides, and after my major force got wiped out, my smaller BTL force was caught from behind.

I'd favor faster ships as you mentioned, with a strong bias towards turrets and CAW weapons. I'd say fighters/bombers as well, since they are also omni directional, but you are going against PHR =p. That said, i'd expect bombers from them as none of their ships have great arcs and they don't have any CAW specific ships besides the Minos (bombers are their CAW).

Well I have a couple of Seattles and an Atlantis. Between them I guess I have plenty of mass drivers and launch assets to at least shut diwn his launch assets.

I know he likes to run launch heavy and has been thinking about running heavy on the frigates.

Dual Berlins with a Jakarta is a tough nut to crack.

If you know he's going to bring lots of Launch, why not load up on Jakartas to shut it down, rather than two Seattles?

Plus, I'd think about swarming one cluster with your Drop, and sending one or two Madrids towards the other to deny him the VPs. Just be sure he commits to one of the clusters before you send your New Orleans and San Fran to the other.

I've played Moonshot more as PHR then UCM, and I like to take a lot of Bellerophons. The F(N) makes it tricky to line them up, but Course Change is your friend here. That and the pingers. You might want to change that lone New Orleans with the Berlin's to a Lima so that the Berlin's can CC but you still get the ping.

Just some thoughts. Good luck! Report back (include his list), please!

Well the Seattles function as pretty decent gunships as well and they are more points efficient then twin jakartas and twin Rio's.

Although I do want to try a non launch UCM fleet sometimes but I've seen what PHR bombers can do so a bit hesitant to do that.

If you opponent is launch heavy, a Jakarta here and there will only delay the pain. It doesn't take that many bombers to take out an unsupported Jakarta. You either want multiples, or you need to support them with your own launch.

With a little luck, I've taken out a Jakarta with 3 fighters for support with as little as 4 Shaltari bombers. PHR bombers would have an easier time sniping out the Jakarta. Granted, you force your opponent to take down the Jakartas first, and they can be used as cheap scan frigates as well.

This is what I plan to use for now. I intend to use the Seattles defensively to cancel the worst of their launch. The single Jakarta is there to shore up the defences of the Berlin and acts as a scan frigate. In combination with two lima's this should give me some flexibility.

The alternative is to ditch the BTLs and go frigate heavy. Not sure if thats the best way to go against PHR

Looks good. Let us know how it goes!

Cruisers are the sweet spot for UCM. The 3+ armor save is huge compared to the 4+ on lower hulls. If the shoulder turrets weren't so meh, I'd play UCM more =/.
