Helping a new player start an army, which to suggest.

PostTue Jul 07, 2015 12:54 am

Greetings,

I'm helping a new player form up a 1500 army for GenCon. I'm trying to get a good fix on which army to start them on, as I am also just starting with UCM. The only army I don't have parts of is Resistance, but I'm not opposed to the idea.

Player details:

-Veteran board-gamer but only has limited minis experience with MERCS
-Generally prefers aggressive playstyles
-Likes Shaltari models
-Would favor armies with more killing power than VP gaining units (gunning destroy the opponents' VP units)

What would be a good fit for a player like this?

If he's an aggressive player and wants killing power, then Scourge would be a good fit.

or Shaltari or everything else... in DZC all armies can be played aggressivly... and still work.

I find it easier to stick w/ a new mini game when I like the models. When a group of friends and I got into Hordes my buddy picked up the Trollkin before introducing the game to me, so I settled on Skorne, and didn't get as interested in it partially b/c of that.

If you friend likes Shaltari models, I say go with Shaltari. Remember he has to paint his army, so he may as well enjoy the models.

As Darios pointed out, you can build any list aggressive, though Scourge are more inclined towards aggressive builds due to their short range.

Couple of good comments here, but I have to agree with chrisloomis. If he like the Shaltari models that much, then he should probably go with that force.

I personally like Scourge. They fit my play style and I like the models. Both are important considerations IMO.

I'd say anything except PHR. While I do love my PHR, they are not for beginners and definitely not ideal for tournaments. DzC is unique in that the slow/tough army is really handicapped due to the huge importance of mobility. Shaltari obviously perform the best, with Scourge probably the next best in the pack.

For his playstyle I think Resistance or Scourge would be best. I always think that the models have highest priority though, he's going to be the one staring at the army all the time so it had better be one he likes so for that reason Shaltari would be a good option too. Its the main reason I picked PHR over Scourge (I love the game, but who wants a shelving unit as a dropship).

So, if he really doesn't like the aesthetics of Scourge, see if he likes Resistance. If that doesn't thrill him, then probably just go for Shaltari because he likes the models and try out some more aggressive builds.
