Two Starter Boxes - Expanding Scourge and UCM forces

PostFri Oct 23, 2015 2:32 pm

Hi all,

New to Dropzone Commander. A gaming buddy and I both purchased the two player starter set (so we have two of the Scourge starter force and two of the UCM starter force).

We are looking to maximize what we have and expand with new units after playing a few games.
Is the best way to do that to try and mimic the sample forces they show in the rulebook?

Thanks!

8-) lurking.... I'd like to see what the experts say, planning to get the 2 player starter too.

Especially the one on expanding for $150.

These are good articles for expanding to 1,500 points, especially if you're on a budget. But I wouldn't use the armies pictured in the core Rulebook as a guide, as the expansion Reconquest: Phase 1 book came out afterwards, and there are lots of units that I would take from that before fleshing out to the "Sample Army" examples in the core Rulebook.

But having two sets of the Starter Armies is a good place to start from for both UCM and Scourge, especially now that UCM Katanas cost the same points as Sabres.

At a minimum you will want to add:
  • A commander model (and both factions have two each, so it's a matter of taste and play style which one you get; if you're undecided, get both and try them both out, as they're both good for different things, and a lot of folks are divided on which one is better.
  • A command card deck (make sure it is the v1.1 of the cards).
  • A copy of Reconquest: Phase 1 for both of you, if you don't have it already.
  • Support Units beyond the AA choices that come in the 2-Player Starter.
  • Light Dropships for your Infantry, at least 2 blisters for each army!
  • Exotic Infantry.
  • Scouts (for UCM this means Wolverines or a Ferrum, or both, although Praetorian Snipers are Scouts, too, so just make sure you have the correct Transport for them for what you want them to do; for Scourge this means Prowlers and Minders, and I like both!).
  • Dropships for the Scouts (but the Ferrum doesn't need an Albatross; it's the Starsprite Drones that are the Scouts).

Then we get into the less urgently needed, but still really fun to have in your armies:
  • Gunships! Falcons are excellent for UCM, as are Reavers for Scourge.
  • Any Heavy options you might want for either faction.
  • Fast Movers if you want them. Archangels provide very good AA coverage in the other guy's backfield foricking off light dropships, but the Scourge Corsairs really need to be taken in numbers to be effective, like two squads of 2, otherwise don't bother with them, and even then you might not really like them, so this would be the last thing you get for Scourge. But two squads of 1 each Archangels can work nicely for you.
Well, I didn't intend to write out a whole list, but just got on a roll...
I love my job (well, I love having a job), but a bad day of gaming beats a good day of work every time!

If you have two UCM plastic starter sets and good silks, you could convert two spare Bears into one Kodiak.
Thus save you some money for another blister or command cards deck.
